Ahmad Abdalla is a multi-award-winning Egyptian filmmaker and a pioneering force in the new wave of independent Arab cinema. Originally trained in music, he transitioned to film editing before making his directorial debut with Heliopolis in 2009, breaking new ground as one of the first independent Egyptian films to achieve a widespread theatrical release. He firmly established his international footprint with his second feature, Microphone (2010), which won over 20 international awards and was named one of the 100 best Arabic films in history by the Dubai International Film Festival.
His critically acclaimed filmography—including Rags & Tatters (2013), Decor (2014), EXT/Night (2018), and Microphone (2010) —has been officially selected by the world’s most prestigious festivals, such as the Toronto International Film Festival, the BFI London Film Festival, the Singapore International Film Festival, and the São Paulo International Film Festival. A recipient of top industry honors, his work has garnered the Golden Award at the Cinemed Mediterranean Film Festival of Montpellier, the Golden Tanit at the Carthage Film Festival, and the Golden Tulip at the Istanbul International Film Festival.
Beyond the director's chair, Abdalla continues to shape the global cinematic landscape by mentoring emerging filmmakers and serving as a distinguished jury member at prominent festivals, including BFI London, Carthage, and Dubai.
